Wherever we may live, we share our environment with other creatures – native animals which have had to adapt to human habitation. Unfortunately, some animals have been injured or orphaned when they come into contact with our way of life. The increasing pressure of land clearance, domestic and feral animals, motor vehicles, and unnecessary human interference all take their toll.

WIRES:

  • Rescue and rehabilitate injured, sick, orphaned or misplaced animals, through a network of trained Volunteer Rescue, Foster carers and veterinarians.
  • Release rehabilitated animals back into the wild.
  • Promote an interest in wildlife in its natural environment.
  • Answer your questions about wildlife, or refer you to experts for information.
  • Distribute information on wildlife and how to lessen human impact, for example: how to create a wildlife habitat in your backyard; the dangers of artificial feeding and details on individual species.

Have you always wanted to help wildlife?

Helping Wildlife WIRES training courses provide you with an understanding of how animals become injured and come into our care. Courses are held at locations throughout NSW, generally between March and November, our quieter period. You must also be over 18 to attend a WIRES training course.

Satisfactory completion of this course will provide you with the skills you need to begin rehabilitating Australian wildlife and NPWS authorisation under the WIRES license to rehabilitate wildlife.

In NSW no person is allowed to care for native animals without an annual authority to act issued under the license held by WIRES, another licensed wildlife rehabilitation organisation or by a privately licensed individual.
